What should you know about soft lump on left side of neck?

The left side contains several lymph-node groups, muscles, blood vessels, and structures connected with the throat and thyroid. A clinician checks whether the lump is superficial or deep, tender or painless, mobile or fixed, and whether it moves during swallowing.

Recent scalp, ear, dental, throat, or skin irritation can enlarge nearby nodes. A lump that persists, grows, feels firm, or appears with other symptoms deserves assessment because neck masses can occasionally be the first sign of a cancer.
