What should you know about soft lump back of neck?

The clinician will check whether the lump is in the skin, under the skin, along a lymph-node chain, or near the spine and muscles. Softness, tenderness, mobility, skin changes, growth, and how long it has been present all add useful information.

A lymph node may enlarge while the immune system responds to an infection in the scalp, throat, or nearby skin. A persistent, enlarging, firm, or unexplained neck mass needs assessment because some cancers first appear as a neck lump.

Arrange a clinical examination if the lump persists, returns, enlarges, or has no clear recent infection. Note when it appeared, whether it changes with illness, and whether you have fever, night sweats, swallowing difficulty, voice change, or unexplained weight loss. The clinician may examine the mouth, throat, thyroid, and lymph-node areas and may arrange ultrasound, a scan, or a biopsy.

Do not repeatedly squeeze or massage the lump, since that can irritate the skin and make changes harder to judge. Bring previous imaging or pathology reports if the area has been assessed before.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain with fever, spreading redness, or new weakness. Arrange prompt medical review for a hard or fixed lump, a lump that keeps growing, persistent hoarseness, blood in saliva, or drenching night sweats.

Ask which structure the lump seems to involve, whether it resembles a lymph node or cyst, and what examination or imaging is appropriate. Ask when it should be reviewed again, whether a biopsy is needed, and which changes should prompt an earlier appointment.
