Sneezing and coughing: what should you know?

Allergic rhinitis may cause repeated sneezing, an itchy nose, clear drainage, and a cough from mucus dripping into the throat. House dust mite allergy or pet allergy can produce this pattern around a particular indoor exposure. A common cold may bring sneezing and cough with sore throat, tiredness, or a blocked nose. A dry cough, chest tightness, wheeze, fever, or symptoms that steadily worsen deserve a broader assessment. Symptoms alone cannot establish the cause.

Rest, drink fluids, and avoid smoke, fragrances, and other airway irritants. Wash hands and improve ventilation when an infection is possible. Note whether symptoms follow cleaning, animal contact, outdoor exposure, or lying down. A pharmacist can discuss suitable symptom relief, while a clinician can check persistent cough, wheeze, or nasal inflammation and demonstrate any inhaler technique that is prescribed.

Arrange medical advice for a cough that persists, repeatedly returns, disrupts sleep, or limits activity, especially with wheezing or chest discomfort. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, faintness, coughing blood, or sudden swelling of the throat or tongue. Do not wait for a routine appointment if breathing is rapidly deteriorating.

Ask whether the pattern suggests allergic rhinitis, a common cold, asthma-related airway irritation, or another problem. Mention fever, mucus colour, chest symptoms, smoking or vaping exposure, and any medicines already tried, because these details help shape the examination.
