Short answer

Snake bite cellulitis is a potentially serious skin infection, and increasing redness, warmth, swelling, or pain needs prompt medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

First priority
Urgent assessment after a suspected venomous bite
Monitor
Spread of redness, swelling, warmth, and pain
Avoid
Cutting, sucking, tourniquets, squeezing, or massage

What may be happening

A bite can break the skin and introduce bacteria, while tissue injury or venom can also cause rapid swelling and pain. Cellulitis may present as spreading Skin Redness, Skin Swelling, warmth, tenderness, or Painful Skin around the wound. These findings can overlap with a bite reaction, so an examination is needed to judge the cause and severity. Do not assume a growing red area is a routine healing response.

A clinician may clean and assess the wound, review vaccination needs, and decide whether antibiotics, observation, or emergency treatment is needed. People with Type 2 Diabetes, reduced immunity, or a pre-existing foot infection such as Athlete's Foot may need a lower threshold for review.

What to do now

Move away from the snake and seek emergency medical advice after any suspected venomous bite. Keep the affected limb still and supported, remove rings or tight items before swelling increases, and note the time and appearance of the bite. Do not cut the wound, suck venom, apply a tourniquet, or attempt to catch the snake. Do not squeeze or massage the area. Avoid self-starting leftover antibiotics; the treatment depends on the wound and clinical findings.

When to seek urgent care

Emergency help is needed for breathing trouble, weakness, faintness, vomiting, confusion, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, numbness, or difficulty moving the limb. Fever, red streaks, pus, blistering, or redness that keeps spreading may signal infection and needs urgent assessment. Cellulitis can progress to Sepsis, so worsening general illness is not a wait-and-see symptom.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the wound shows cellulitis or another bite complication, whether you need antibiotics or antivenom assessment, and how to mark or monitor the edge of redness. Confirm wound-care instructions, activity limits, vaccination advice, and the exact symptoms that require returning immediately.

Questions people ask

Can a snake bite cause cellulitis?

Yes. A break in the skin can allow bacteria to enter, although swelling may also result from injury or venom, so assessment is necessary.

Is redness after a bite always infection?

No. Redness has several possible causes, but spreading redness with worsening pain, warmth, swelling, or fever needs prompt care.
