Short answer

SmoothSkin Bare Ultrafast IPL uses pulses of light to heat pigment in suitable hair follicles, so careful skin matching and consistent safe use matter.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How home IPL works

Intense pulsed light is a broad range of light rather than a single laser wavelength. The device targets pigment in hair, and the absorbed light becomes heat around the follicle. Hair colour, skin tone, treatment area, and the growth phase of the hair affect how well this approach works. It is intended for appropriate external skin areas, not for every body site or every person.

Home devices generally deliver less energy than professional systems, but incorrect use can still irritate or burn skin. IPL is different from an IPL photofacial, which is a clinician-selected treatment for some cosmetic skin concerns.

Safer preparation and use

Read the device instructions and use any built-in skin-tone guidance. Test a small area as directed, start with clean dry skin, and remove surface hair by shaving rather than pulling it from the root when the instructions advise. Keep the device away from eyes, tattoos, very dark marks, broken skin, active rashes, and recently tanned skin. Wear no products that could increase irritation during a session.

Space sessions according to the manufacturer’s schedule and avoid extra flashes on one spot. Protect treated skin from strong sun, and stop if the area becomes unusually painful or blistered. A clinician can help if you have a skin condition, take photosensitising medicine, or are unsure whether the device is suitable.

When to seek care

Seek medical advice for blistering, marked swelling, severe pain, pus, spreading redness, or a dark or light patch that persists after treatment. Get urgent help for facial or eye symptoms, breathing difficulty, or widespread blistering. Do not continue IPL over skin that is inflamed, infected, or changing unexpectedly.

Questions for your doctor

Is my skin tone and hair colour appropriate for home IPL? Could my medicines or skin condition increase light sensitivity? Which areas should I avoid, and how should I manage a reaction? Would professional IPL or another option be more suitable for my goal?

Questions people ask

Is home IPL the same as a laser?

No. IPL emits a broad range of light, while a laser uses a more focused wavelength. Both can heat hair pigment, but their settings and suitability differ.

Can I use home IPL on recently tanned skin?

Follow the device instructions and avoid use when skin is recently tanned or sunburned. Extra pigment can raise the chance of an unwanted skin reaction.
