What should you know about SMI surgical sutures?

SMI surgical sutures are medical threads used to hold wound edges together while healing begins. A clinician chooses the thread and technique according to the wound location, depth, tension, and expected healing. Sutures may sit in the skin or deeper tissue, and some are removed after healing while others gradually dissolve.

A suture supports the wound edges so they are less likely to separate when you move. It does not replace normal tissue repair. Mild tenderness, tightness, itching, or a small amount of dried blood can occur near a fresh repair. Keep the area clean and follow the dressing instructions you were given. Avoid pulling, scratching, soaking, or stretching the wound until a clinician says it is ready.

Wash your hands before touching the dressing or nearby skin. Use only the cleaning method recommended for that wound, and keep adhesive strips or dressings in place as directed. Do not cut or remove a thread yourself. Ask when the wound should be checked and whether the sutures are dissolvable. Protect the area from friction, heavy lifting, and activities that put the wound under tension.

Arrange prompt medical review if redness spreads, swelling increases, pain becomes severe, the wound opens, or pus or a bad smell develops. Fever, red streaks extending from the wound, numbness, or difficulty moving the nearby body part also need assessment. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding that does not stop with firm direct pressure, or if you feel faint or seriously unwell.

Ask which type of suture was used, how long it should remain, and how the dressing should be changed. Clarify whether bathing, exercise, work, or travel needs temporary modification. You can also ask how to recognise infection and who to contact if a stitch loosens.
