What should you know about a smelly rash under the breast?

The warm, covered area beneath the breast can stay damp and rub against itself or clothing. Intertrigo describes inflammation in a skin fold; yeast or bacteria may grow in the damaged, moist skin and add odour, soreness, weeping, or small surrounding spots. Contact dermatitis, heat rash, psoriasis, ringworm, and other conditions can resemble it, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Notice whether the rash is itchy, burning, cracked, scaly, sharply bordered, or linked to a new soap, bra, deodorant, medicine, or fabric. These details help a clinician choose the right treatment.

Gently wash the fold and pat it fully dry; do not scrub. Wear a clean, breathable bra or clothing, change damp fabric promptly, and use a soft dry layer only if it does not trap heat or rub. Stop newly introduced fragranced products on the area.

Avoid using steroid, antifungal, or antibiotic creams without advice when the diagnosis is uncertain. A clinician may recommend a targeted medicine after examining the rash, especially if the skin is cracked or oozing.

Book an assessment if the rash is painful, recurrent, spreading, cracked, oozing, or not improving with careful drying. Seek prompt medical care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, marked warmth, pus, or severe tenderness. Emergency help is needed for facial swelling or breathing difficulty after a product or medicine.
