What should you know about SMC malaria?

The short answer
It is a planned prevention programme, not a replacement for assessment and treatment when a child becomes unwell. The programme is usually organised through local health services in areas where it is recommended.
How SMC works
Malaria is an infection transmitted by mosquitoes. In some settings, transmission rises predictably during a particular season. SMC uses medicine courses given at planned intervals during that higher-risk period to reduce the chance of malaria in children who meet the local programme criteria.
Eligibility, the medicine used, and the schedule are set by the local health authority. A child may not be suitable if they have certain illnesses, medicine allergies, or are already taking medicines that need review. Tell the health worker about all medicines and previous reactions.
What families can do
If SMC is offered where your child lives or travels, follow the instructions for each dose and keep the medicine out of reach of other children. If vomiting happens after a dose, or a dose is missed, contact the programme team or a clinician for advice instead of automatically giving an extra dose.
Preventing mosquito bites still matters. Use the protective measures recommended locally, especially in the evening and overnight. Before travel to an area with malaria, a travel health consultation can clarify whether malaria prophylaxis or other precautions are appropriate for each traveller.
When to get medical help
Seek medical assessment promptly for fever, chills, muscle aches, unusual sleepiness, repeated vomiting, breathing difficulty, confusion, seizures, or a child who is drinking poorly. These symptoms need evaluation whether or not SMC has been given.
Tell the clinician about recent travel, mosquito exposure, all SMC doses, and any medicine taken. A blood test may be used to check for malaria and help guide treatment.
