What should you know about smart spirometer?

A smart spirometer is a digital device used for breathing tests. You breathe through a mouthpiece, usually with a firm seal and a forceful, sustained blow. The device may record airflow and the amount of air exhaled, then display a result or send it to a clinician.

Readings can vary with effort, posture, recent activity, a blocked nose, the mouthpiece seal and device quality. A single result cannot establish the cause of breathlessness or diagnose every lung condition. Formal spirometry uses a structured protocol and may include repeated measurements.

Follow the instructions supplied for your device and use the same position and time pattern when tracking changes. Sit or stand as advised, seal your lips around the mouthpiece, and stop if you become dizzy or unwell. Clean the mouthpiece as directed and never share it without appropriate hygiene.

Keep a brief record of symptoms, medicines and unusual exposure alongside the readings. Share the trend with a clinician. Spirometry can help assess breathing, but treatment decisions should not be changed from a device alert without medical advice.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, inability to speak in full sentences or rapidly worsening breathing. Arrange medical review for recurring cough, wheeze, chest tightness, reduced exercise tolerance or consistently unusual readings, even if the app says the result is acceptable.
