Small White Dots Around the Eyes

Milia commonly appear as smooth, firm, pearly dots on the eyelids or upper cheeks. They are different from inflamed pimples, which may be red, tender, or associated with a blocked pore. Folliculitis can be itchy or sore and usually follows a hair follicle. Irritant or inflammatory conditions may cause burning, scaling, redness, or clusters around the eyes. The location makes self-treatment risky because products can enter the eye and the eyelid skin is especially thin.

Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free product, keeping it out of the eyes. Avoid rubbing, scrubbing, squeezing, needles, and cosmetic extraction tools. Stop any new eye cream or makeup that seems to trigger irritation, and use clean applicators when products are resumed. Do not apply acne acids, retinoids, steroid creams, or essential oils near the eyelids unless a clinician has specifically advised you. A dermatologist can confirm milia and discuss removal if they persist or bother you.

Seek prompt medical advice if the dots are painful, rapidly increasing, crusted, draining, or surrounded by swelling and redness. Get urgent help for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or changed vision, marked eyelid swelling, or difficulty opening the eye. A lesion that bleeds, repeatedly crusts, or changes should be examined rather than treated as a cosmetic spot.
