Small TENS Pads: What to Know

Short answer

Small TENS pads deliver mild electrical stimulation through the skin and may support temporary pain relief when used with correct placement and settings.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Sensation
Tingling or tapping, never a sharp or burning feeling
Avoid
Broken skin, bathing, sleeping, driving, and the front of the neck

How the pads work

The pads connect to a TENS Unit and transmit low-level pulses through intact skin. The sensation is usually a tingling or tapping feeling; it should not feel sharply painful or burning. TENS can change how pain signals are processed, but it does not repair a fracture, infection, or structural injury. Its usefulness varies with the pain problem and electrode position.

Small pads can be practical for a focused area, but pad size and spacing affect the sensation. Placement should follow the device instructions or advice from a physiotherapist. Avoid placing pads over broken, infected, numb, or irritated skin.

Using small pads carefully

Clean and dry the skin, check that the pads and leads are undamaged, and begin with the device intensity low. Place pads around the painful area as directed rather than directly across the front of the neck or over the eyes. Keep the device switched off while attaching or moving pads. Remove them if the skin becomes painful, blistered, very red, or unusually numb, and allow the skin to settle before trying again.

Do not use TENS while driving, bathing, sleeping, or operating machinery. Ask a clinician before use if you have an implanted electrical or cardiac device, a seizure disorder, reduced sensation, or are pregnant, because placement and suitability need individual advice.

When to seek care

Stop using the pads and seek advice if stimulation causes chest discomfort, palpitations, dizziness, breathing difficulty, a burn, or a persistent skin reaction. TENS should not delay assessment for new weakness, progressive numbness, severe injury, fever, unexplained swelling, or pain that is rapidly worsening. If pain repeatedly returns when the device is removed, arrange an assessment of the underlying problem rather than increasing the intensity.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Is TENS suitable for my pain? Where exactly should the small pads go? What intensity and session length are reasonable? Which skin changes mean I should stop? Could my medicines, implanted device, pregnancy, or reduced sensation affect safe use?

Questions people ask

Can small TENS pads go directly on a wound?

No. Use pads only on intact, clean, dry skin and follow the placement advice for your device.

Can I turn the TENS intensity up if it is not helping?

Do not chase pain relief by using an uncomfortable intensity. Check placement and discuss persistent pain with a clinician.
