Small Red Dots on Skin: Cherry Angiomas

A cherry angioma is usually round, red to purple-red, and smooth or slightly raised. It may occur on the trunk, arms, or other skin areas and can catch on clothing or bleed after rubbing. A changing spot is not automatically a cherry angioma: colour variation, an irregular outline, crusting, repeated bleeding, or a new rapidly changing lesion warrants examination. A clinician can often assess it by looking closely, sometimes with a dermatoscope, and may recommend testing if the appearance is uncertain.

Leave an asymptomatic spot alone and protect it from repeated friction. If it bleeds after minor trauma, apply steady gentle pressure with clean gauze and keep the area covered until the surface closes. Do not cut, burn, or tie off a lesion at home. Photographing a spot can help you notice genuine change rather than relying on memory.

Arrange a skin assessment for a spot that changes quickly, develops an uneven border, repeatedly bleeds, crusts, becomes painful, or cannot be confidently identified. Seek prompt care if bleeding does not settle with sustained pressure or if the surrounding skin becomes increasingly red, swollen, and tender.

Ask whether the lesion has the expected features of a cherry angioma, whether removal is medically needed, which option fits its location, and what marks or wound care to expect afterward.
