What should you know about small razor bumps?

Short answer
Small razor bumps commonly reflect irritation around shaved follicles or hairs growing back into the skin, and technique can affect recurrence.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the bumps may mean
Ingrown Hairs can create itchy or tender raised spots when a cut hair curves into nearby skin. Pseudofolliculitis Barbae is a recurring form of razor bumps, often in the beard area, where tightly curled hairs re-enter the skin after shaving. Folliculitis can cause follicle-centred red bumps or pus-filled spots and may be triggered by friction, sweat, or microbes. Small rough bumps on the upper arms or thighs may instead fit Keratosis Pilaris, which is not caused by shaving.
How to calm and prevent them
Pause shaving the area while it is inflamed. When you resume, soften hair with warm water, use a clean sharp razor, apply shaving gel, shave in the direction of growth with light strokes, and avoid stretching the skin or repeatedly passing over one spot. Rinse, pat dry, and use a bland moisturiser. Do not dig out hairs, squeeze bumps, or share razors. If shaving repeatedly causes problems, a clinician can discuss options such as Laser Hair Removal.
When to seek care
Arrange medical care if bumps become increasingly painful, warm, swollen, or filled with pus, or if redness spreads or fever develops. Seek review for deep lumps, scarring, dark marks that persist, or frequent recurrences despite gentler shaving. Urgent help is appropriate for rapidly spreading redness with severe illness or facial swelling.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the bumps are ingrown hairs, folliculitis, or Keratosis Pilaris; which shaving changes fit your hair and skin; and whether a longer-term hair-reduction option is suitable.

Questions people ask
Should you pop a razor bump?
No. Squeezing or digging can worsen inflammation, introduce infection, and increase the chance of marks or scarring.
Why do bumps return after shaving?
Close cutting, curved regrowth, friction, and repeated passes can allow hairs to irritate the follicle or re-enter the skin.
