Size alone cannot identify a lump. A lymph node may enlarge after a cold, throat infection, ear problem, or irritation on the scalp. Other possibilities include a blocked skin gland, cyst, inflamed follicle, or benign fatty lump. Make a note of the lump's position and size, and whether it is tender or changing. Do not pop, cut, or massage it. Ask what structures lie beneath the lump, whether it resembles a lymph node or skin lesion, and how long observation is reasonable. Ask what test would clarify it, which symptoms need faster review, and when you will receive the result.
