What should you know about a small neck lump on the side of the neck?

The side of the neck contains lymph nodes, muscles, salivary tissue, blood vessels, and parts of the thyroid and throat. A recent infection may make a lymph node enlarge and become tender. Cysts and other benign changes are also possible. A neck lump is a presentation of lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or head and neck cancer in some people, but its size or position does not prove the cause.

Assessment focuses on the lump’s texture, mobility, tenderness, duration, and growth. The clinician may also ask about dental symptoms, sore throat, hoarseness, swallowing, fever, night sweats, and unexplained weight loss.

Book an appointment when the lump has no clear explanation, remains after an illness, becomes larger, or is joined by another lump. Observe its changes without squeezing it. Bring a list of recent infections, dental treatment, medicines, and symptoms affecting the throat or voice.
