What should you know about a small movable lump on the side of the neck?

Lymph nodes can enlarge while the immune system responds to a throat, ear, dental, or skin infection. A cyst, thyroid-related lump, or other non-cancerous change can also occur. A neck lump is a presentation of lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or head and neck cancer in some people; the lump itself cannot identify the cause.

A clinician will consider when it appeared, whether it is changing, whether it is tender, and whether there are symptoms such as hoarseness, swallowing difficulty, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss. Examination may include the mouth, throat, skin, thyroid, and nearby lymph-node areas.

Arrange a medical assessment if the lump remains, grows, returns, or has no clear link to a recent infection. Note its location and changes without repeatedly pressing it. Write down recent infections, dental problems, medicines, smoking or vaping exposure, and any voice or swallowing changes to discuss at the visit.

The clinician may recommend imaging or a needle sample based on the examination. A test does not mean cancer is present; it helps distinguish among causes and directs the next step.

Seek urgent help if the lump is accompanied by trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids, rapidly increasing swelling, or severe weakness. Contact a clinician promptly for a persistent or enlarging lump, a hard or fixed area, persistent hoarseness, or unexplained night sweats or weight loss.
