Small lumps on both sides of the neck

Lymph nodes on both sides can enlarge when the immune system responds to an infection affecting the throat, mouth, teeth, ears, or scalp. Several small nodes may be felt at once, and they can be tender. Skin cysts, inflammation, and other soft-tissue conditions can also produce more than one lump.

Lymphoma and some head and neck cancers can present with neck masses, but the presence of lumps on both sides does not identify the cause. Thyroid disease is considered when a lump is near the thyroid, especially in the lower or front neck. A clinician uses the pattern, examination, and any test results together.

Write down when each lump appeared, whether both sides changed together, and whether there was a recent infection or dental problem. Notice tenderness, skin redness, firmness, mobility, and any change in swallowing or voice. Do not keep prodding the area, squeeze the lumps, or try to drain them. Arrange an examination if they remain, enlarge, or have no clear link to a short-lived illness. Ultrasound or other tests may be considered after the examination.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, or rapidly increasing swelling. Arrange prompt medical review for hard or fixed lumps, persistent hoarseness, ongoing fever, drenching night sweats, or unexplained weight loss. These findings have multiple possible explanations, so they should lead to assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Ask whether the lumps appear to be lymph nodes and what nearby infection could explain them. Ask if both sides need imaging, what change would require earlier review, and whether your medicines, dental history, or recent illness are relevant.
