What should you know about small insect bites?

The skin reacts to material introduced during the bite, producing itch and local inflammation. Several similar bumps may appear where skin was exposed, while bites around an ankle or lower leg can swell more after walking. Scratching can break the skin and allow infection. After healing, darker or lighter marks may remain; this is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in some skin tones. The appearance alone does not identify the insect.

Wash the area, apply a cool compress, and avoid scratching. Loose clothing can reduce rubbing. A topical corticosteroid may calm inflammation when a clinician or pharmacist confirms it is suitable for the site. An oral antihistamine may help itch for some people, but check directions and interactions first. Remove a visible stinger carefully without squeezing the surrounding skin, and consider bed linens, pets, or outdoor exposure if new bites keep appearing.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or widespread symptoms after a bite. Arrange prompt review if redness spreads, the area becomes hot or very painful, pus develops, fever appears, or the bite is near the eye. A bite that does not settle, or repeated unexplained lesions, may need a different diagnosis.
