What should you know about small hard lump on side of neck?

The side of the neck contains chains of lymph nodes, muscles, salivary tissue, blood vessels and nerves. A lymph node may swell while the body responds to an infection in the throat, teeth, ear or nearby skin. A cyst, thyroid-related swelling or other mass can also occur there. Head and neck cancer and lymphoma are among the conditions doctors may consider, but the presence of a lump does not establish either diagnosis.

The clinician will assess whether it is tender, mobile, deep, fixed, changing or associated with symptoms such as sore throat, dental pain, fever, voice change or difficulty swallowing. Ultrasound and a needle sample may help identify its nature.

Book an appointment if the lump persists, grows, feels hard and fixed, or has no clear link to a recent infection. Write down when it started and any changes in size, tenderness or movement. Mention smoking or alcohol exposure, dental problems, recent illness and previous cancer treatment if relevant. Avoid squeezing it. Further care may involve imaging, tissue sampling or referral to an ear, nose and throat specialist. Thyroid removal surgery is relevant only when testing shows a thyroid reason.

Seek emergency help if swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing saliva, or if you develop sudden weakness, confusion or severe pain. Seek prompt clinical review for rapid growth, persistent hoarseness, trouble swallowing, coughing blood, unexplained fever, night sweats or unexplained weight change.
