Small dermatofibroma: what to know

Dermatofibromas often feel firm and sit within the skin, commonly on an arm or leg. They may be brown, pink, or close to the surrounding skin and can remain much the same over time. Some pull inward when gently pinched from the sides. That feature can support a clinical impression, but it does not replace examination. A new lump can have many explanations, so avoid diagnosing it from a photograph alone.

Do not squeeze, cut, freeze, or repeatedly irritate the nodule. Take a clear photograph beside a ruler and record any change in size, colour, surface, or symptoms. If it is repeatedly caught by clothing, itchy, tender, or cosmetically bothersome, a dermatologist can discuss observation or surgical excision. Removal leaves a wound and may leave a scar, so the expected benefit should be weighed carefully.

Arrange a review when the lump grows, changes colour, becomes painful, crusts, bleeds, or develops an uneven surface. Seek prompt attention for rapid change, persistent ulceration, or marked inflammation. A clinician may examine it closely and decide whether further testing is needed.
