Small cell lung cancer symptoms

Symptoms from [Lung Cancer](/conditions/lung-cancer/) may include a cough that does not settle, breathlessness, wheezing, chest pain, repeated chest infections, coughing blood, reduced appetite, or unexplained tiredness. A tumour near the voice box or its nerves may cause a [Hoarse Voice](/symptoms/hoarse-voice/). The presence of a symptom does not establish small cell lung cancer, and a person may have few symptoms early on.

Small cell disease can spread beyond the chest. Depending on the area involved, this may cause persistent bone pain, headaches, confusion, weakness, balance changes, or seizures. [Brain Metastases](/conditions/brain-metastases/) are assessed urgently when neurological symptoms appear. Other explanations, such as infection, asthma, reflux, or medication effects, remain possible.

Arrange a clinical review for a cough, hoarse voice, breathlessness, chest discomfort, or repeated infection that persists or worsens. The clinician may examine your chest, check oxygen levels, arrange imaging, and take samples if needed. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe before mentioning them.

Seek emergency care for severe or sudden breathlessness, blue lips, chest pain, coughing a large amount of blood, new confusion, a seizure, sudden weakness, or difficulty staying awake. Contact the care team promptly for worsening symptoms, inability to keep fluids down, fever during cancer treatment, or a new neurological change.

Ask which symptoms need same-day advice, what tests will clarify the cause, whether imaging should include the brain, and how symptom relief will be provided while diagnosis is being established. If cancer is found, ask how stage and tissue findings shape treatment.
