What it may mean
Light spotting can occur when the cervix is more sensitive, including after sex or an examination. It can also accompany changes in early pregnancy, but the amount and colour do not identify the cause. Ectopic pregnancy can present with vaginal bleeding, often with one-sided pelvic or abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, or faintness. Bleeding later in pregnancy has different possible causes and needs advice from the maternity team.
What to do next
Contact your midwife, obstetrician, maternity unit, or urgent medical service when you notice bleeding. Describe when it began, its colour and amount, whether clots are present, and any pain or fluid loss. Use a pad to observe the bleeding rather than inserting anything into the vagina. Keep your pregnancy details and blood-group information available if you have them. Do not wait for a routine appointment if symptoms are worsening.
When to seek care
Seek emergency care for severe or one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, faintness, collapse, heavy bleeding, fever, or feeling very unwell. These symptoms can occur with ectopic pregnancy or another complication requiring immediate assessment. Urgent review is also needed if bleeding follows abdominal injury or comes with fluid leaking from the vagina.
