What should you know about slow growing lung cancer?

Slow-growing lung cancer may change gradually, but it still needs specialist assessment, regular monitoring, and an individual treatment plan. The pace can differ between tumour types and between people, so scans, symptoms, stage, and overall health guide decisions.

Doctors assess change using imaging, examination, symptoms, and sometimes tissue or genomic information. A tumour that appears stable on one scan may still require planned surveillance. Lung cancer can remain limited to the chest or spread to other areas, and the treatment approach depends on its location, size, stage, cell type, and molecular features.

Some people have few symptoms at first. A persistent cough, breathlessness, chest discomfort, weight change, or hoarse voice deserves medical review, but these symptoms can have many causes. A hoarse voice is not proof of lung cancer; it is a symptom that may need assessment.

Keep every scan and appointment, and ask how your team will judge whether the cancer is stable or changing. Discuss genomic tumour profiling when the team thinks tumour biology could guide treatment. Depending on stage and fitness, options can include surgery such as lung lobectomy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or carefully planned observation.

Tell the team about smoking, medicines, breathing conditions, and changes in daily activity. Palliative care can be added at any stage to help with symptoms, emotional strain, practical needs, and treatment decisions; it does not mean that cancer treatment has stopped.

Contact your cancer team promptly for worsening breathlessness, new chest pain, coughing blood, fever, or a sudden drop in energy. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, fainting, or heavy bleeding. New severe headache, weakness, trouble speaking, or a seizure also needs urgent assessment because cancer can sometimes affect the brain.

Ask: How is growth being measured, and when is my next scan? What type and stage of lung cancer do I have? Would genomic tumour profiling change treatment choices? Is surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or observation suitable? Which symptoms should lead me to call the team immediately?
