Skinny needle biopsy: what to know

A skinny needle biopsy, often called fine-needle aspiration, uses a narrow needle to collect cells or fluid for examination under a microscope. It is commonly guided by touch or imaging, depending on where the area lies. The sample can help distinguish a cyst, inflammation, benign change, or a cancerous process, but the result must be interpreted with examination and imaging.

The clinician cleans the skin, may use local anaesthetic, and passes the needle into the target for one or more samples. A small dressing is usually placed afterward.
