What should you know about skincare for blackheads?

A blackhead is an open comedone: oil and dead skin cells fill a pore, and the exposed material darkens when it contacts air. It is not simply dirt. Blackheads commonly appear on the nose, forehead, chin, chest or back. They can occur as part of acne, including comedonal acne, but similar-looking spots need assessment if they are persistent or unusual.

Wash gently and avoid abrasive brushes, pore strips and squeezing, which can inflame skin or leave marks. A clinician may recommend a topical retinoid to normalise shedding inside pores. Introduce treatment gradually and moisturise to reduce dryness. Non-comedogenic products may be useful. Professional extraction can be considered when congestion is stubborn, but it should be performed with clean technique by an experienced provider.

See a dermatologist when blackheads are widespread, painful, scarring, repeatedly returning despite a routine, or accompanied by deep inflamed spots. Seek prompt assessment for a rapidly changing, bleeding or crusted lesion that does not behave like a pore blockage.
