What should you know about skin tags around the anus?

A perianal skin tag is a soft projection or loose fold near the anal opening. It may remain after stretched or inflamed skin settles, including after a haemorrhoid or an anal fissure, or it may develop from local friction and irritation. It can make cleaning difficult or feel uncomfortable when sitting, but it does not automatically explain every symptom in the area.

A lump can also be a haemorrhoid, wart, abscess or another lesion. Pain, bleeding, discharge and a change in bowel habits should not be attributed to a skin tag without an examination. A clinician can inspect the area respectfully and decide whether further assessment is needed.

Clean gently after bowel movements with water or unscented material, then pat dry rather than scrubbing. Keep the area dry and avoid fragranced products. Do not cut, tie or burn the fold yourself, and do not apply wart products unless a clinician specifically advises it.
