Short answer

A small soft growth on the eyelid or nearby skin may be a skin tag, but several eyelid lesions can look alike. The eye area is delicate, so scissors, thread, acids and over-the-counter wart products are unsafe choices. An examination can distinguish a typical tag from a mole, wart or another lesion and can identify irritation from contact lenses, cosmetics or rubbing.

How the eye area affects the picture

Eyelid skin is thin and moves constantly, so a tag may catch on glasses, be rubbed during sleep or become inflamed by makeup. A lesion close to the lash line can also interfere with blinking or irritate the eye surface. Note its exact location, colour, shape and any change in vision. A photograph taken in good light can help you describe changes at an appointment, but it does not replace examination.

Avoid picking the growth and pause products that sting or cause redness around it. Keep makeup tools clean and avoid applying acids or freezing kits close to the eye. A dermatologist or suitably trained eye-care clinician can explain removal using a method selected for the eyelid position, including cryotherapy, electrosurgery or another minor technique. Follow aftercare instructions closely and keep any prescribed ointment away from the eye surface unless directed.

Signs that need attention

Seek prompt medical advice for a growth that bleeds, crusts, ulcerates, changes shape or colour, or causes persistent pain. Get urgent help for sudden vision change, marked swelling, severe eye pain, light sensitivity, pus or difficulty opening the eye. These symptoms can reflect eye or eyelid problems rather than a simple skin tag.
