What should you know about a skin tag under the tongue?

Skin tags are extra skin growths, but tissue beneath the tongue can also reflect irritation, a blocked salivary gland, a cyst, a traumatic ulcer, or another oral lesion. A clinician or dentist may ask about biting, dental appliances, tobacco or alcohol exposure, and how long the change has been present. Texture, colour, firmness, and whether it moves help guide the examination.

Do not snip, tie, burn, or apply skin-tag products inside the mouth. Keep regular oral hygiene, avoid repeatedly touching the area, and choose softer foods if chewing is uncomfortable. Arrange an oral examination if the tissue persists or keeps getting rubbed. If it is confirmed to be a removable lesion, the clinician can explain whether a minor procedure is appropriate; external skin treatments such as cryotherapy or electrosurgery are not automatically suitable inside the mouth.

Seek prompt assessment for a lesion that does not settle, enlarges, becomes firm, bleeds, forms an ulcer, or causes ongoing pain. Get urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing tongue or floor-of-mouth swelling, heavy bleeding, or fever with spreading swelling. These symptoms need direct medical attention.

Ask what the tissue appears to be, whether a dental or oral-medicine assessment is needed, whether sampling or removal is appropriate, and which symptoms should prompt urgent review.
