When a Skin Tag Is Sore: What to Know

A skin tag may become sore when it rubs against clothing, is caught during shaving, or twists around its narrow attachment. The surface can become inflamed or bleed after repeated contact. Pain is not proof that the growth is a skin tag, so a clinician should reassess it if the appearance changes, the tenderness persists, or the lesion becomes firm or open.

Reduce rubbing with loose, breathable clothing and keep the area gently clean and dry. Avoid picking, cutting, tying, or applying wart-removal chemicals. If the tag repeatedly catches or remains sore, ask a clinician about removal; options can include a minor procedure selected after examination of the lesion and its blood supply.

Arrange prompt care for pain that is worsening, bleeding that keeps returning, pus, spreading redness, warmth, marked swelling, fever, or a new colour or shape. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe swelling, or rapidly worsening pain. These findings may indicate injury, infection, or another diagnosis and should not be dismissed as ordinary friction.

Ask whether the soreness comes from friction, twisting, or infection and whether the lesion still looks like a skin tag. Discuss whether removal would reduce repeated injury, how to care for the site afterward, and which changes require review.
