Skin Tag in the Throat: What to Know

Skin tags are surface growths usually found on areas where skin rubs. The throat contains delicate lining and several structures, so a lump, dangling tissue, or rough patch there may have causes other than a skin tag. A clinician may inspect the mouth and throat with suitable lighting or a small camera and decide whether further testing is needed.

Do not pull at, scrape, or try to burn tissue in the throat, and do not use skin-tag products inside the mouth. Arrange an assessment if the sensation or visible growth persists. Note when it began and whether it changes with swallowing, speaking, meals, or lying down; these details help the clinician understand the problem.

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing swelling, choking, or blue lips. Arrange prompt medical review for persistent hoarseness, painful swallowing, unexplained bleeding, a neck lump, or worsening symptoms. These warning signs require direct examination rather than treatment based on an assumption that the tissue is a skin tag.

Ask which throat structure is involved, whether the appearance fits a skin tag, and whether an ear, nose, and throat referral or tissue sampling is appropriate. Ask what symptoms should prompt immediate return while you wait.
