Skin Tag in a Private Area: What to Know

Skin tags are small pieces of extra skin that can hang from a narrow base or sit more broadly on the surface. In an intimate area, rubbing from underwear, moisture, shaving, or sexual activity can make an otherwise quiet tag feel tender or catch on fabric. A genital or groin bump is not automatically a skin tag, so appearance alone is not enough for self-diagnosis.

Do not cut, tie off, burn, or apply wart remover to the lesion yourself. Keep the area gently clean and dry, avoid shaving directly over it, and choose clothing that reduces rubbing. A clinician can examine the surface and base, then discuss removal if it is repeatedly irritated or bothersome. Options may include clinician-directed excision, cryotherapy, or electrosurgery; the choice depends on the lesion and its location.

Arrange a prompt assessment if the growth changes quickly, develops an irregular appearance, bleeds without clear friction, forms an open sore, becomes increasingly painful, or is accompanied by discharge or a new cluster of bumps. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe swelling, fever, or trouble passing urine. These signs need assessment because they are not typical irritation from a simple skin tag.
