Skin Tag in Hair: What to Know

Skin tags are benign growths made from skin and supporting tissue. They are often soft and may hang from a narrow attachment. A bump in hair can instead be an inflamed follicle, cyst, mole, wart, or another lesion. Rapid enlargement, a firm base, crusting, or a persistent sore deserves an examination rather than an assumption based on its location.

Keep combs, razors, and clothing from repeatedly catching the area. Do not tie thread around it or apply home acids. A dermatologist can confirm what it is and discuss removal if it snags, bleeds, becomes inflamed, or is cosmetically bothersome. Depending on the attachment and location, options can include cryotherapy, electrosurgery, or skin tag removal with appropriate wound-care advice.

Arrange prompt review if the bump changes in colour or shape, grows quickly, bleeds without catching, becomes increasingly painful, or develops pus, warmth, or spreading redness. Seek urgent care for uncontrolled bleeding, fever with rapidly worsening redness, or severe pain. A symptom signals a need for assessment; it does not identify the diagnosis by itself.

Ask whether the lesion is consistent with a skin tag, whether hair removal should be paused, which procedure best suits its base, how long tenderness may last, and how to recognise infection during healing.
