Skin scraping test procedure

The test is commonly used when a rash may be caused by a superficial fungus. Fungal infection can resemble eczema, psoriasis, irritation, or other conditions, so looking at skin scale can help guide treatment. A clinician chooses an active, scaly margin when possible and explains what will be collected. The sample is from the outer skin rather than a deep surgical procedure.

The clinician examines the area, cleans it if needed, and uses a sterile blade or scraper to lift a small amount of scale. The material may be placed on a slide for microscopy or sent for culture. You may feel light pressure, scraping, or brief tenderness. Tell the clinician about antifungal creams, tablets, steroid products, allergies, and broken skin. Follow any instructions about washing or applying products before the visit. If fungus is confirmed, treatment may include Oral Antifungal Treatment when appropriate.

After sampling, seek advice if bleeding does not settle, pain increases, or the site becomes hot, swollen, or increasingly red. Arrange review if the rash spreads quickly or affects the eyes, mouth, or genitals.
