Skin Pigmentation After Burn Treatment

A healed burn can leave an area darker than nearby skin, especially after inflammation or sun exposure. It can also look lighter when pigment-producing cells have been affected. Texture changes, tightness, or a shiny surface may point to scar tissue rather than pigment alone. The shade may be uneven and can become more noticeable when surrounding skin tans.

Use gentle cleansing and moisturising once the skin surface has closed. Protect the area from sunlight with clothing and a broad-spectrum sunscreen suitable for healed skin; reapply as directed outdoors. Avoid picking, harsh scrubs, and unprescribed lightening products, because irritation can deepen colour change. A dermatologist can distinguish pigment from a scar and discuss prescription creams or procedures when appropriate.

Arrange a clinical review if the treated area becomes increasingly painful, warm, swollen, wet, or tender, or if it develops new blisters, open skin, or discharge. Seek prompt advice when pigmentation spreads quickly, changes in an unusual pattern, or comes with persistent burning or altered sensation. A review is also useful when the colour change is affecting daily life or does not gradually settle.
