What should you know about skin healed over stitches?

As a wound closes, new tissue can grow around a stitch. Dissolvable material may be absorbed gradually, while non-dissolvable sutures usually need removal according to the procedure plan. A small firm point or mild pulling sensation can occur near a healing wound. The thread should not be pulled out at home, because this can reopen the wound or introduce bacteria. A stitch that is completely covered, increasingly painful, or producing discharge may be irritating the tissue or associated with infection.

Follow the wound-care instructions you were given. Keep the area clean and dry as directed, wash your hands before touching it, and avoid picking at scabs or cutting visible thread. Do not apply creams, antiseptics or dressings unless advised for that wound. Contact the clinic that placed the stitches if the removal date is unclear or a thread has become buried. Mention the wound location, procedure date and whether the sutures were intended to dissolve.

Arrange prompt review for spreading redness, increasing warmth, swelling, pain, pus, bad odour, fever or a wound that is opening. Seek urgent care for uncontrolled bleeding, severe pain, sudden wound separation, numbness beyond the expected area or feeling very unwell. A dirty or puncture wound may also require assessment of tetanus protection.
