What should you know about skin graft wound dressing?

The dressing supports close contact between graft and wound bed, absorbs expected fluid, and limits friction. Some dressings are left undisturbed so the graft is not lifted during early healing; the donor site may have a separate covering.

A small amount of staining may be expected, but the appearance of a dressing cannot show the full condition of the graft. The planned review lets the clinical team check attachment and decide when the covering can change.

Keep the covering clean, dry, and secure according to your discharge instructions. Do not peel it back to inspect the wound, add household products, or replace a specialist dressing unless you were shown how. Prevent rubbing and pressure, and follow instructions about washing and activity.

If the dressing becomes loose, wet, dirty, or soaked, call the treating team for specific advice. Do not improvise a tight wrap, because pressure can affect the graft and circulation.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing pain, spreading redness, worsening swelling, pus-like drainage, bad odour, or fever. Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, a graft that is exposed or pulled away, or severe illness.

Ask how long this dressing should stay on, what to do if it gets wet, and whether you may shower or sleep on that area. Confirm the signs of infection, the review date, and whether the donor site needs different care.
