Skin grafting is more commonly used for external wounds; a graft in the tongue area may refer to reconstruction of oral tissue or a graft near the mouth. The exact technique depends on the wound, its depth, and the surgeon’s plan.

Swelling, altered sensation, tightness, and difficulty with speech or swallowing can occur after surgery. These symptoms need to be interpreted in context because the mouth is active with every meal and conversation.

Follow the surgeon’s instructions for mouth care, food texture, fluids, medicines, and activity. Choose only the foods recommended for your stage of healing, avoid sharp or irritating items, and do not pull at sutures or coverings.

Keep every review appointment. A surgeon, dentist, or speech and swallowing specialist may assess movement, nutrition, wound protection, and whether the graft is attaching as expected. Do not use mouthwash or topical products unless prescribed.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow liquids, rapidly increasing swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, or choking. Contact the treating team promptly for worsening pain, foul drainage, fever, wound separation, or a sudden change in tongue movement.

Ask what tissue was grafted, where it came from, what foods and brushing are allowed, and how speech or swallowing should progress. Clarify which symptoms need a same-day call and when the first wound review will occur.
