Skin graft surgery recovery involves protecting the graft, caring for the donor wound, gradually restoring movement, and attending reviews that guide each next step. Recovery is not measured by appearance alone: the graft must remain attached and the wounds must close without infection or excessive tension. Instructions vary with the body area and operation.

Dressings may stay in place while the graft settles. You may notice soreness, swelling, itching, tightness, altered sensation, or changing colour around the graft and donor site. Activity restrictions protect the repair, especially where joints, the face, hands, feet, or abdomen are involved. Once the wounds close, rehabilitation, moisturising, scar care, and sun protection may become part of the plan.

Take prescribed medicines as directed and keep dressings clean, dry, and secure according to your instructions. Elevate a limb if advised, avoid pressure on the graft, and do not pick at crusts or test the wound by pulling the dressing. Move only as permitted; a therapist may provide exercises when stiffness is a concern. Keep follow-up appointments even if the site looks comfortable.

Call the surgical team for worsening pain, expanding redness, heat, swelling, pus-like drainage, bad odour, fever, or wound separation. A graft that becomes suddenly pale, purple, grey, or black needs prompt assessment. Seek urgent help for bleeding that will not stop with the instructed pressure, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, faintness, or breathing difficulty.

Ask when dressings will change, how to wash, which activities are restricted, and what milestones allow more movement. Confirm when you can return to work, drive, swim, exercise, or begin scar treatment, and who to contact outside office hours.
