A skin graft on the stomach or abdominal area needs stable dressings, careful movement, and clear instructions because bending and clothing can stress the wound. The graft may cover an abdominal wound, while skin may have been taken from another body area. Your surgeon’s plan depends on depth, size, location, and the reason for reconstruction.

Sitting up, coughing, twisting, and bending can pull on abdominal skin. Waistbands and close-fitting clothing may rub the dressing or press on the graft. Mild tightness, tenderness, swelling, and itching can occur, but the team should assess changes that are worsening rather than settling. A graft may look different from surrounding abdominal skin while it heals, and a donor site may cause separate discomfort.

Use the supported position and movement technique shown by your care team. Avoid lifting, strenuous exercise, repeated bending, and friction until cleared. Choose loose clothing that does not catch on dressings. Keep the area dry or clean it only as instructed; do not apply oils, antiseptics, or home remedies beneath a dressing. Keep the donor site covered as directed and attend wound reviews.

Seek prompt medical advice for increasing abdominal redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, bad smell, fever, wound separation, or pain that is getting worse. Contact the team urgently if the graft changes to grey, purple, or black, if bleeding soaks through the dressing, or if swelling appears rapidly. Severe abdominal pain, vomiting, faintness, or breathing difficulty requires urgent assessment.

Ask how to get out of bed, whether coughing support is needed, what clothing is suitable, and when you may shower, drive, work, exercise, or sleep in your usual position. Confirm which symptoms should lead to a same-day call.
