Skin Graft on Ear Cartilage: What to Know

Ear cartilage has limited soft-tissue cover, so a graft may be used after injury, surgery, or removal of damaged skin. The graft and its dressing can feel tender, numb, swollen, or tight. Sleeping on the ear, wearing tight headphones, or catching the dressing on clothing can place pressure on the healing surface. The surgeon will assess whether the graft is attaching and whether the cartilage remains protected. The donor site also has its own wound-care instructions.

Keep the dressing in place exactly as instructed and avoid soaking, scratching, or applying products unless prescribed. Sleep in the position recommended by your team and keep hair, helmets, headphones, and spectacles from rubbing the site. Protect the ear from sun after the wound has closed. At later review, ask whether scar care or fractional laser treatment could help with a healed texture or colour change; laser is not a substitute for care of an open wound.

Call the treating team if the graft lifts, the dressing becomes soaked, pain increases, redness spreads, swelling worsens, or drainage becomes cloudy or foul-smelling. Fever, chills, exposed cartilage, or a sudden dark, pale, or cold graft needs prompt medical attention. Seek urgent help for uncontrolled bleeding or severe deterioration.

Ask how to sleep, wash your hair, protect the ear outdoors, and manage a loose dressing. Confirm which swelling and colour changes are expected, when the graft will be checked, and how the donor site should be covered.
