Skin Graft on the Big Toe: What to Know

The big toe helps with balance and push-off, so ordinary walking can place repeated pressure on a graft. Early swelling, tenderness, numbness, or a tight dressing may occur, but the surgical team should explain what is expected for your wound. A graft may be taken from another body site, creating a second area that also needs dressing care. Foot shape, footwear, circulation, diabetes, and the depth of the original wound can influence healing.

Use the footwear, off-loading device, crutches, or rest schedule prescribed for you. Keep the toe dressing clean and dry, and do not trim grafted skin or remove crusts yourself. Check the surrounding skin as instructed, without repeatedly disturbing the dressing. Avoid tight shoes and unapproved creams. At follow-up, ask when normal footwear, bathing, exercise, and full weight-bearing can resume. After closure, a clinician may discuss scar care or fractional laser treatment if texture or colour remains troublesome.

Contact your care team for increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, pus, bad odour, fever, bleeding, a loose graft, or wound separation. A toe that becomes unusually pale, blue, cold, or very swollen needs prompt assessment because circulation or pressure may be affected. Seek urgent care if severe pain or rapidly worsening colour change is accompanied by feeling unwell.

Ask exactly how much weight the toe may take, how to use prescribed off-loading, when dressings will be checked, and what to do if the dressing slips. Confirm how diabetes or circulation issues change your follow-up plan.
