Skin Graft Cosmetic Surgery: What to Know

A graft can cover tissue that cannot be closed directly after removal, injury, or another procedure. The surgeon selects skin from a donor area and places it over the recipient area, where it must connect with the wound bed to heal. Grafted skin may differ from nearby skin in colour, thickness, hair growth, sensation, or flexibility.

Cosmetic goals should be discussed alongside function and safety. The visible recipient scar is only part of the result; the donor site also heals with its own mark. Healing may be affected by the location, tension, smoking or nicotine exposure, medicines, medical conditions, and wound care. A consultation should explain alternatives, expected changes, and the possibility that refinement may be considered later.

Bring a complete medication and health history, including previous reactions to anaesthesia and problems with wound healing. Ask how to prepare the donor and recipient sites, what dressing will be used, and which activities may stretch or press on either area. Protect both sites from friction and sun, avoid picking, and use only products approved by the surgical team.

Keep every review appointment even when the graft looks quiet. Early appearance can be misleading, while scar colour and firmness may change as healing continues. Discuss any desired cosmetic refinement only after the surgeon has assessed tissue maturity.

Call the surgical team for worsening pain, spreading redness, warmth, fever, new drainage, wound separation, or bleeding that does not settle with the instructed pressure. Rapid darkening of the graft or a dressing soaked with blood needs prompt review. Severe pain, heavy bleeding, faintness, or rapidly increasing swelling requires urgent medical attention.

Ask why grafting is preferred, what alternatives exist, where the donor site will be, how colour and texture may differ, what recovery restrictions apply, and whether later scar treatment such as fractional laser treatment might be suitable.
