What should you know about skin flaking off?

Short answer
Skin flaking off usually reflects dryness, irritation, sun injury, or inflammation, but infection and other skin conditions can also cause peeling.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why skin may peel
Flakes form when the outer skin cells loosen faster than usual. Dry air, frequent washing, harsh cleansers, friction, and irritating treatments can disturb the barrier. Peeling after redness and heat exposure can follow sunburn. Thick, recurring silvery scale may occur with psoriasis, while scaling between the toes or on the soles can occur with athlete's foot.
The site, colour, itch, pain, and timing matter. Peeling over a small dry patch is different from widespread shedding, oozing, blisters, or skin that is tender and hot.
Protect the area
Do not pull, scratch, or scrub loose skin. Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and apply a fragrance-free moisturiser or ointment. After sun exposure, keep the area cool, cover it from further sun, and drink to thirst. Do not share towels, socks, or footwear if a foot fungus is possible, and avoid applying steroid cream to a suspected infection without medical advice.
When to seek care
Arrange an appointment if peeling persists, recurs, spreads, or affects the nails, scalp, or several body areas. Seek prompt care for blisters, open or oozing skin, increasing pain, pus, fever, rapidly spreading redness, or peeling after a new medicine. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, faintness, or widespread blistering.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pattern fits dryness, sunburn, psoriasis, or a fungal infection, and whether testing is needed. Ask which moisturiser or treatment is appropriate, how to prevent recurrence, and which products should be paused.

Questions people ask
Should you remove peeling skin?
No. Let loose skin shed naturally and moisturise the area to reduce cracking and friction.
Can peeling skin be contagious?
Peeling itself is not contagious, but a fungal cause such as athlete's foot can spread through shared towels, socks, or footwear.
