Short answer

Basal cell carcinoma is a skin cancer that needs diagnosis and treatment because it can damage nearby tissue.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding basal cell carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma begins in basal cells in the outer layer of skin. It commonly develops on areas exposed to ultraviolet light, including the face, scalp, ears, neck, and hands. It may look like a shiny bump, a pink or scaly patch, a sore that heals and returns, or a spot that bleeds easily. Sun-Damaged Skin can increase concern, but a skin lump or sore cannot be diagnosed from appearance alone. A clinician may examine it closely and take a biopsy.

Treatment choices

Treatment is selected according to the lesion’s site, size, borders, depth, and your general health. Options can include Surgical Excision, Mohs Surgery, Photodynamic Therapy, Imiquimod Treatment, or Radiotherapy. Surgery is often considered when tissue must be removed and checked; Mohs Surgery can be useful when preserving healthy tissue and checking margins during the procedure matters. Do not apply unprescribed creams to a suspicious mark. Protect exposed skin from ultraviolet light and keep scheduled skin checks.

When to seek care

Book a dermatology appointment for a new or persistent bump, scaly patch, sore, crust, or mark that changes, bleeds, becomes tender, or fails to heal. Seek prompt review when a lesion is growing or repeatedly breaking down. Earlier assessment helps the clinician plan treatment before a lesion extends further into nearby skin; it does not mean that every skin lump is basal cell carcinoma.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether a biopsy is needed, what subtype and depth are present, which treatment fits the location, how margins will be checked, what scar or wound care involves, and how often you should have follow-up examinations.

Questions people ask

Is every persistent skin lump basal cell carcinoma?

No. Skin lumps have many causes, so a persistent or changing one needs examination rather than self-diagnosis.

Can basal cell carcinoma be treated without surgery?

Some lesions may be suitable for prescription treatment, photodynamic therapy, or radiotherapy after assessment.
