What should you know about skin burn bandage?

Burning may follow heat, friction, a chemical, sun exposure, or an irritating product. It can also occur with Contact Dermatitis, Rosacea, or Shingles, so not every burning sensation is a surface burn. Blisters, broken skin, reduced sensation, pale or charred areas, and worsening pain suggest a more significant injury. The location matters too: burns involving the face, hands, feet, genitals, major joints, or a large area deserve medical advice.

For a fresh minor heat burn, cool the area under cool running water and remove jewellery or tight items before swelling develops. Do not use ice, butter, toothpaste, or adhesive directly on damaged skin, and do not burst blisters. Once cooled, cover loosely with a sterile non-stick dressing or clean cloth. Keep the dressing dry and replace it if it becomes wet, dirty, or stuck. If a dressing causes itching or a new rash, consider Contact Dermatitis and ask a clinician or pharmacist for an alternative.

Seek urgent care for a deep-looking burn, electrical or chemical injury, breathing symptoms, extensive blistering, severe pain, or signs of infection such as spreading redness, pus, fever, or increasing warmth. A bandage does not replace assessment for burns over sensitive areas. New one-sided burning pain followed by a stripe of blisters should be checked because Shingles can present this way.
