Short answer

A healthy-looking glow comes from gentle cleansing, moisturising, sun protection, and treating the cause rather than using harsh home remedies.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a glow reflects

Dull or uneven-looking skin may reflect dryness, irritation, oiliness, acne-related marks, sun exposure, or a skin condition. A glow is not a diagnosis. Lemon juice, baking soda, undiluted essential oils, and abrasive scrubs can disrupt the skin barrier and leave burning, peeling, or darker marks, particularly in sensitive or deeper skin tones. Oily skin with scaling around the scalp, eyebrows, or nose may occur with seborrheic dermatitis; spots and marks may relate to acne or hormonal acne.

Safer home care

Use a mild cleanser, a fragrance-free moisturiser, and broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin. Introduce one gentle brightening ingredient at a time, such as a product containing niacinamide or azelaic acid, and stop if burning or a persistent rash develops. Patch-test new products on a small area first. Do not mix several exfoliants or apply food ingredients to irritated skin. If oiliness is the main concern, choose lightweight, non-comedogenic products rather than stripping the skin. A dermatologist can address an underlying condition; prescription treatment such as isotretinoin is not a home remedy and needs medical supervision.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment for new or rapidly changing pigmentation, persistent itch or scale, painful acne, recurrent flushing, or a rash that does not settle after stopping an irritant. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, blistering, breathing difficulty, or eye involvement. Bring the products you use so the clinician can identify possible triggers.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what is causing the uneven appearance, which ingredient suits your skin, how to introduce it, and how to protect against further darkening. Ask whether acne, hormonal acne, seborrheic dermatitis, or another condition needs treatment first.

Questions people ask

Can lemon juice brighten skin safely?

It can irritate skin and increase sensitivity; use a formulated product instead and stop any product that burns.

Why does my skin look dull despite skincare?

Dryness, irritation, sun exposure, oiliness, acne marks, or an underlying skin condition can all contribute.
