What should you know about skin blisters on legs?

Short answer
Skin blisters on the legs may follow friction, burns, sun exposure, irritation, eczema, or infection; the surrounding rash and your other symptoms matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common trigger
- Friction from footwear or clothing.
- Basic care
- Clean gently and use a non-stick covering.
- Escalate for
- Spreading redness, fever, pus, or difficulty walking.
Why leg blisters can appear
Blisters at a shoe, sock, or clothing pressure point often reflect friction. A blister after heat, a hot surface, or strong sun exposure can reflect a burn or Sunburn. An itchy rash after a new detergent, plant, adhesive, or topical product can be a presentation of contact dermatitis. Clusters of painful blisters on one side of the leg can occur with shingles. Blisters alongside a widespread itchy illness can occur with chickenpox. Eczema can also cause fluid-filled lesions, although the leg location and pattern are not enough to diagnose it.
How to protect the area
Gently clean the skin, dry it without rubbing, and use a soft non-stick dressing if clothing or footwear will touch it. Avoid the activity, heat, or product that triggered the blister. Do not peel away an intact blister roof or puncture it at home. If it breaks, rinse with clean water, keep the remaining skin in place, and cover it with a fresh dressing. Change the covering when wet or dirty and limit rubbing while it heals. Skin Blisters explains general blister care and warning signs.
When to seek medical care
Get prompt medical advice for spreading redness, warmth, drainage, worsening pain, fever, red streaks, or difficulty walking. Seek urgent care after a large or deep burn, rapidly spreading blistering, severe swelling, or blisters affecting the eyes or mouth. Arrange a review when blisters keep returning, appear without friction or exposure, or fail to improve. A clinician may discuss Antiviral Treatment if the pattern suggests a viral infection.
Questions for your doctor
Does the pattern fit friction, contact dermatitis, a burn, eczema, or infection? What dressing is suitable for this location? When can I resume exercise, and which symptoms should prompt urgent care?
