Sjogren's and Ankylosing Spondylitis: What to Know

Ankylosing spondylitis often causes back or buttock pain with stiffness that is worse after rest and may improve with gentle movement. It can gradually limit spinal or hip movement. Sjogren's-related joint discomfort may occur alongside dryness and tiredness, but it does not follow the same pattern in every person. Joint stiffness, morning joint stiffness, and reduced range of motion deserve assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Keep a brief record of morning stiffness, back or hip pain, eye and mouth dryness, fatigue, medicines, and activities that help or worsen symptoms. A rheumatology assessment can separate overlapping complaints and check for associated problems. Treatment may include anti-inflammatory medication when appropriate, plus physiotherapy and exercise therapy adapted to spinal mobility, posture, breathing, strength, and energy levels. Hydrotherapy can be useful when land exercise feels uncomfortable.

Arrange medical review for persistent inflammatory-type back pain, steadily worsening stiffness, new difficulty walking, or a noticeable loss of movement. Seek urgent care for sudden severe weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, major eye pain or vision change, or a rapidly swollen and very painful joint.
