Bartholin cyst size: what it can mean

A small cyst may feel like a smooth lump near the vaginal opening and cause little or no discomfort. As a cyst enlarges, pressure can make sitting, walking or sexual activity uncomfortable. An abscess may be very tender even when the swelling does not seem large.

Pain, warmth, redness, pus and rapid change are more concerning for infection than a measurement alone. A lump can also have another cause, so a clinician may need to inspect and feel it rather than judge it by size at home.

Note when you first noticed the lump, whether it is growing, and whether pain or discharge has appeared. Keep the area clean and dry, choose loose clothing, and avoid squeezing or piercing it. A warm sitz bath may provide comfort for a mild, uncomplicated cyst.

Book an assessment if the lump persists, returns, becomes bothersome or prevents normal activity. Treatment may involve observation, drainage or Bartholin Cyst Marsupialisation, depending on the examination findings.

Seek prompt care for severe pain, fever, feeling faint or unwell, rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness, pus, difficulty walking or sitting, or difficulty passing urine. A new Bartholin-area lump after menopause should also be assessed rather than monitored solely at home.

Ask what the lump most likely represents, whether infection is present, whether it can be watched, and which treatment would reduce recurrence. Mention previous cysts, drainage, fever, discharge and changes in size.
