What should you know about single pulmonary nodule?

Short answer

A single pulmonary nodule is a small rounded area seen in the lung; it may have a harmless cause or need further assessment, so one scan does not establish cancer.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Comparison, CT follow-up or biopsy may be considered

What the finding means

A nodule can reflect a previous infection, scar tissue, inflammation or another process. Its appearance, position, change over time and your health history help clinicians decide what it may represent. Many nodules cause no symptoms and are found unexpectedly on imaging. A nodule is a finding, not a final diagnosis, and the report may recommend comparison with older images or additional imaging.

A [CT Scan](/treatments/diagnostics-and-staging/ct-scan/) can show detail such as edges and internal features more clearly than a basic chest image. The decision pathway should be individualised rather than based on the word nodule alone.

What to do next

Arrange the recommended review and bring earlier scan reports or images if you have them. Ask whether the nodule has changed, whether another CT is needed, and what interval is appropriate. Depending on its appearance and your overall risk, clinicians may recommend observation, specialist review or a [Biopsy](/treatments/diagnostics-and-staging/biopsy/) to examine cells. Do not start or stop medicines based on the scan wording alone, and tell the team about smoking history, previous cancer, infections and immune conditions.

When to seek care

A nodule found incidentally is usually handled through planned follow-up, but seek urgent care for severe breathlessness, coughing up significant blood, blue lips, fainting or chest pain with collapse. Contact your clinician promptly for persistent coughing, worsening breathlessness, unexplained weight change, fever that does not settle or new chest pain, while remembering that these symptoms have many possible causes.

Questions for your doctor

How large and how dense is the nodule? Were older images compared? What features affect the follow-up plan? Do I need another CT, specialist review or biopsy? Who will track the result, and when should I expect the next appointment?

Questions people ask

Does one pulmonary nodule mean cancer?

No. A nodule can have several causes, and imaging alone may not identify the cause.

Why might follow-up imaging be suggested?

Comparing images over time can show whether the finding is stable or changing.
